Factor V Leiden
|Signs and symptoms
Factor V Leiden is a mutated form of clotting factor V resulting in hypercoagulability.
Related surgical procedures
In a normal patient, protein C is an anticoagulant protein which binds to factor V to inhibit its function. The Factor V Leiden mutation results in an inability of Protein C to bind to factor V, thus resulting in hypercoagulability.
Signs and symptoms
Factor V Leiden does not result in decreased life expectancy despite increased risk for DVT.
Most common in ethnic Europeans. Named after the Dutch city of Leiden.
