CPO

Brief description

  • 5-6 patients scheduled per day (though there are often 1-2 add-ons)
  • Typically alternate patients with the other resident, see the patient then staff with the attending

Where to show up

  • Lower concourse of JHOC
  • Provider room is off of the main waiting area

What to wear

  • Scrubs! Or business casual if you prefer

Hours/Call/Weekends

  • Official hours are 7am-5pm M-F but can alternate who takes the first patient
  • Someone has to hold the code pager from 7-5 and respond to JHOC codes however interns cannot do this, so it ends up being the senior resident

Tips

  • Anesthesia control center code: 1655
  • Bring stethoscope
  • In Epic, select “AMB/IP Resident” (job) and “JHOC PREOP EVALUATION” (dept)
  • Once logged in, use the “An Review” tab (at the top) to check patient’s surgery posting (duration, postop location ie ICU vs floor)
  • One of the most important things is to go through patient’s meds and list which they need to take vs hold before surgery (roadmap has guidance for each class of medication)
  • There is a “CPO Resident Orientation” packet with instructions on workflow, how to document, who to contact for different things. TLDR below:
    • Anticoagulation questions: can reach out to Stephanie Robertson, PharmD via staff message using the dotphrase .CPOREFERRAL
    • Pacemaker/ICD that needs to be interrogated (typically the case if it hasn’t been interrogated in the last 6 months): email [[1]] with the following info: pt name/MRN, DOS/time/OR venue, manufacturer of device, surgeon’s name and contact info, device indication (if known), and any additional details if relevant
    • Care coordination: secure chat Pod B CPO for administrative requests such as obtaining outside records
    • Edmonton Frailty Questionnaire: MA fills out this form with patients and if they score higher than 6, you just message Pod A CPO to FYI them of this

Vital Information

  • Follow roadmap (PDF emailed out before the rotation starts by Nicole Gauthier, lead NP in the clinic)
