Why use WikiAnesthesia as a residency program?
All residency programs have fresh learners every year who not only must learn about must learn and adapt to a brand new hospital system. WikiAnesthesia can not only provide general anesthesia knowledge, but also provide hospital-specific information that can be geared towards residents through the our Practice Groups.
Examples of things that can be included in a residency practice group
- Rotation guides (e.g. cardiac, pain)
- Call guides (e.g. night float, peds call, airway call)
- Important door codes or phone numbers
- Surgeon-specific practices under each type of case
- Anesthesia attending preferences
Getting started
- Create a practice group for your hospital/institution if one does not exist already. You can see our practice group guide here for more general information about how to create and manage a practice group as well.
- Create a dashboard page. This serves as your "home page". The home page can be formatted however you wish, and can be the place that all members of your hospital click on to find their most important information. For example, you may choose to set up a table with a list of your call guides and rotation guides, or have 1 section that links to all door codes, or have a section that links to a roster of all residents and their contact information.
- Once you decide how you want your dashboard to look, you can create articles within your practice group. This is where the meat of each article will live. To do this, click on "Articles" in the menu and then "Create new article". Under "Choose who can create or edit this article", select your practice group.
- Note that if you want to link to a PDF, Word document, or other file, you do have the option of uploading it to the WikiAnesthesia server and linking to it. Documents should not include PHI or other sensitive information. A workaround is to house the file in a secure location (e.g. institution's shared drive) and then put a link in WikiAnesthesia to that document.
How to document institutional preferences for surgeries
Under any surgical procedure that has an existing article, you can create a practice group specific article. Under the title of the article, you will see "Public article" and "Create [name of hospital] article". Here, you can document surgeon specific preferences that impact anesthesia or anesthetic practices that may vary from general practice. For instance, perhaps your institution performs endarterectomies under EEG monitoring. This can be documented here so that residents and newcomers can be aware before starting a case. Or perhaps thyroid surgeon Dr. A wants the bed rotated 90 degrees while Dr. B wants the bed rotated 180 degrees. The practice group page can be as granular or broad as you wish to make it.
