ENT - Intern Rotation (Hopkins)

Rotation vibes/recommendations

This is very much a make your own adventure rotation. The ENT residents are very excited to have the anesthesia interns rotating with them. All ENT interns rotate on anesthesia and the anesthesia residents make it a VERY easy rotation (like don't have to come in at all some days). So the ENT residents are very invested in making this an educational but very chill rotation for the anesthesia interns.

If you want to be in the OR, you can do that. If you want to help with floor stuff, you can do that. If you want to help with consults, you can do that too.

Here are my recommendations:

• Stick with the consult resident(s) mostly because you see a wide variety of things (facial lacerations, laryngeal injuries, vertigo, angioedema, etc)
  • Offers most opportunity to do different things (OR, facial laceration repairs, nasolaryngoscopy, etc)
• If there is going to be an interesting airway case or potentially difficult airway, ask if you can go watch the intubation
• Scrub in for consult cases that get taken to OR

Location

Resident workroom is on Weinberg 3rd floor right next to patient waiting room. Door code is 1080.

Personnel

• ENT has A LOT of different services (head and neck, oto, facial plastics, laryatrics (peds ENT), laryngology, consults, etc)
  • The consult service sees everything but peds and they are also responsible for responding to DARTs
• They have 1-2 junior residents and 1-2 senior residents covering each service. There are only 3-4 residents per class so they are all very close and help each other out a lot so it can be very confusing to tell who is covering what service.
• The head and neck service has two AMAZING APPs, Hannah and Jeanine <3
• The consult service has an APP, Esther, that is there are certain days to help with scopes

Schedule

• Typically arrive at 7 am
• Rounds are at 5:30 am but there is NO expectation to attend (no really educational so I never went)
• End time varies greatly depending on the amount of consults (anywhere from 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm)
• If there are days off you want, just let one of the Chiefs (Sarah Bessen, Allie Berges, Tolani Olonisakin) know

Attendings

Interactions are largely with other residents on this rotation. The attendings are nice and welcoming, but you will only really interact with them if you choose to go to the OR for cases or when staffing consults with them.

Patient List

• Sign into Epic under Job: Acadmic AMB/IP Resident and Department: JHH PROV OTO
• Ask a resident to share the active consult list with you. It will show up under "Shared Lists."

Notes

• There is no expectation that you write notes, but it is very helpful for the consult resident to help start notes.
• I used .OHNSCONSULT2023 and would just do the HPI, physical exam, labs, imaging, and assessment. I would either leave the plan blank for the consult resident to fill in or update it later if I was around to finish up the note.
